$751.8 million earned so far.
The Hollywood Reporter states the film finished the Christmas period at the Box Office earning a whopping global total of $751.8 million. It beat out other seasonal movies Mary Poppins Returns and Bumblebee by significant margins. This puts the movie on trajectory to easily make over $900 million by the time it leaves theaters.
Whether or not Aquaman will manage to reach the big $1 billion mark remains to be seen. Only eight other superhero films have accomplished this feat and the only DC movies to manage it were The Dark Knight and its sequel The Dark Knight Rises.
Regardless, these numbers will see Aquaman take the mantle for the biggest Warner Bros. and DC title since the previously mentioned The Dark Knight Rises earned $1.09 billion during its run. The gap may also be a little bit larger as these numbers have not been adjusted for inflation.
Additionally, Aquaman has notably been an incredible success for DC outside of the US market. To date, it’s earned $560 million, putting it ahead of every other DC superhero movie so far. Chinese audiences have been a huge part of this by contributing $260 million.
This also puts Aquaman in line to beat out Wonder Woman, which has been DC’s only other relative success in recent years. Wonder Woman hit cinemas in 2016 and took home $821.8 million worldwide.
These numbers are interesting as Aquaman didn’t do very well during its opening weekend. In fact, it had the lowest numbers of any DC universe movie ever.
For comparison, Wonder Woman racked up a total of around $103 million during this time whereas Aquaman only earned $67.4 million. This is even lower than Justice League, which only managed $93.8 million but has already been eclipsed by Aquaman’s total box office as it only garnered $657.9 million in sales.
