AFCON group tricky for Super Eagles, say Lawal, Imenger – Daily Trust

As reactions continue to trail the recently held draws for the 2019 AFCON, former Nigerian internationals, Garba Lawal and Barnabas Imenger have said the Super Eagles have a tricky group to contend with when hostilities kick-off in Egypt in June.

On Friday night, the three time African champions were drawn in group B along with Burundi, Madagascar, the two debutants and Guinea.

The Super Eagles who will open their campaign against debutants Burundi are highly favoured to progress from the group.

However, in exclusive chats with Daily Trust on Sunday, the former Super Eagles players cautioned against over confidence as they said there are no more minnows in world football.

Lawal said the group may look quite simple on paper but the Super Eagles cannot afford to take any chances with their less illustrious opponents.

“As the highest ranked nation in the group, there may be temptation to tip the Super Eagles to stroll into the next round but football is not like that.

“Every country that has qualified for the AFCON deserves respect. So it will be wrong to just conclude that the Super Eagles are in a very simple group.

“Instead, we have to encourage the team to prepare more for the 2019 AFCON. Football is played on the field and not pages of paper,” said the Real Stars of Kaduna coach.

On his part, Imenger said the group won’t be an easy one for the Super Eagles because all the teams in the group will go the extra mile to beat them.

According to him, most African nations still respect the Super Eagles so beating them is like winning the World Cup.

“One mistake most people are making is that they think the Super Eagles will find their opponents so easy to beat.

“I don’t think it will be easy for the Super Eagles. Of course they have the pedigree but they must justify it on the field of play.

“Every nation in AFCON wants to beat the Super Eagles so they shouldn’t take any opponent for granted,” advised the Team Manager of Lobi Stars.
