(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The 5-year-old McHenry County boy authorities say was killed by his parents died from blunt-force injuries to his head, the coroner said Thursday.
Andrew “AJ” Freund Jr. was reported missing a week ago by his father, setting off an investigation that increasingly centered on the child’s parents, Andrew Freund Sr. and JoaAnn Cunningham. They were charged this week with murder and ordered held on $5 million bond each.
AJ’s body was recovered from a shallow grave near Woodstock, officials said. According to court documents, both JoAnn Cunnigham and Andrew Freund Sr. forced AJ into a cold shower “for an extended period of time”, and the 5-year-old was repeatedly struck, leading to his death three days before he was reported missing.
The coroner officially identified the body as that of AJ’s.
“An autopsy conducted Thursday resulted in a finding of the cause of death as craniocerebral trauma as a consequence of multiple blunt force injuries,” a news release said.
